Emergency Portable Power

Years ago I like every other teenage male, was caught in the car craze. And like so many I spent all my money on my old wreck. The point being that years later when I was needing power because, the grid was down, or I had no money for grid power, or I was off camping where grid power was not available. I know everyone has said, buy a gen-set. Well those things are expensive, often are temperamental, and really when you think about it they tie up a lot of cash that you could be using for something else.

So after one particularly bad hurricane/tornado came through and leveled power lines, we were looking at a week with no power. Bummer, all that stuff in the fridge and freezer would go bad. Especially the kids formula.

Get ready because here comes my alternative emergency and portable power.

Sipping on a glass of recipe, I had a brainstorm. My old junker from my teenage years was sitting in the barn's side shed, along with my boat, tractor, and old truck. I remembered having moved the battery of the Rebel (AMC) to the trunk 'cause a magazine said I would get better traction. I went through the barn and gathered up all the batteries and cables. I mounted all the batteries in the trunk of the car and cabled them together in parallel. I had 9 batteries in the car's trunk with plenty of extra space. To keep the starting battery from discharging I have a wing-nut on the ground of the second battery. Not charging just spin it off and lay the cable to the side. To charge the batteries just put it back on. Too simple. Huh?
